| In the Year 2008
Lake Gaston, May
Destination: Lake Gaston
So another year of sailing adventure begins....
We got together with the
ncsail.org group again to ply the inland waterways... ok so it was a big
pond with lots of houses around. We took off on a 3 hours
tour uh drive to Littleton at the
Outdoor World campground. The real fun was going up and down
the hill in the dark on small country roads. This time I had the
entire crew... even my oldest daughter Nicole went with us.
We launched Friday night and
docked
for the night. Got up in the morning, had breakfast on the boat
then walked around and met the others that showed up for the event.
The winds were good at 8-15mph and my oldest daughter allowed me to put
up the jib and sail. We motored a while to see around the lake and
find the wind sweet spot. As we were sailing towards the dam one
of the other members was sailing towards us... and I assumed friendly
intentions, yes my fatal mistake when sailing with the pirates of ncsail.
As we were passing they opened up with a water balloon attack... luckily
their aim was bad so the damage to personnel was minimal. After
sailing for a long time, and my older daughter begging to go tubing, I
went and found a calm cove to anchor in and have lunch. We then
broke out the tube and tested out the versatility of our boat much to
the delight of the kids. We had a small engine problem one time...
I had turned off the engine for a little while and then couldn't get it
to crank again. Turns out the 1500watt inverted I installed in the
boat for
the
Pirate Fest fog machine was accidentally turned on while we were sailing
and drained the battery. Luckily the Honda 50 can be pull started.
We then docked and joined in on the pig-picken dinner, it was a nice
spread.
After the dinner and games there was one sailor of the
group stuck out on the lake with no gas and no wind. Knot Shore
loaded up and came to the rescue... the tubing rope still makes a good
tow rope. The next morning we had the "World Famous Pancake
Breakfast" with sausage... it was pretty good. We then headed out
to do some more sailing... this time we stocked up on ammunition (thanks
to the kids winning a water balloon launcher at the games the night
before) . The wind was just right to put up both sails and not
have the kids whining about the heeling. We then started to set
our tactical battle plans and load out ammunition. We closed in on
several targets (with the help of the iron sail) several times, we took
heavy damage but so did those scurvy dogs who started. We ended
the day by giving our host Kenny one shot as we passed to go home.
Everyone had a great time.
Our Private Beach,
July
Destination: Shackleford Island
One of our usual sailing destinations is the Shackleford
Island... also known as the boaters beach or the island with the ponies
on it..
My
daughters invited
a
friend name Logan to come along... they all seemed to have fun powering
to the island... only takes 5 minutes from the launch. We played
in the warm water and sand, then had lunch.
After a while a front was forming so we raised sails and headed to
the Beaufort Waterfront.
Bike Beach,
August
Destination: Neuse River
My youngest daughter and I went out for a quick sail and
discovered a smaller beach area which she named "Bike Beach"... because
there was a half buried bike in the sand.
Pirates Fest 08 with
NCSail.org , 2nd
Weekend in October
Destination: Cape Lookout
Ok
so the wife and kids were really pumped about this year, especially
after seeing the fun I had last year... unfortunately the weather did
not cooperate. We took off on Friday morning and motored out to
Cape Lookout to hide the treasure. The wind was
strong
but manageable... no rain yet. We then all took and buried the
clues and the treasure (see map right), and then motored back to the
Beaufort Docks.
Then the rain started as we went to dinner... appropriately
dressed (see left pic)... and the rain didn't stop until Sunday morning.
We had a captains' meeting which consisted of rain and 25+mph winds, and
a tough time getting back on Sunday. We tried to make it to the
inlet but visibility became an issue; and not wanting to put my kids and
wife at any risk we turned around and anchored for a while. It
still didn't let up... so we loaded up the boat and called it a day.
